Licensing Boards Continue Aggressive Investigations and Prosecutions

Continuing a trend that first became noticeable last year, Department of State prosecutions for all professional Licensure Boards remained near record levels. In total, 14,749 new files were opened in the year ending June 30, 2005. This is consistent with the figures published for 2004 (15,470 new cases) and both of the last two years represent dramatic increases from previous years (for example, 2003: 8,333; 2002: 7072; 2001: 5,829; 2000: 6,129; 1999: 5,905).

As for individual Licensure Boards, for the year ending June 30, 2005, the Medical Board opened 4,960 new cases, and handed down sanctions including 33 suspensions, 15 revocations, and 126 other sanctions. There remained 4,335 open files compared to 3,502 the previous year.

The Osteopathic Board opened 796 new cases, up from 574 the previous year. The Board also handed down 7 suspensions, and 1 revocation and 33 other sanctions. 734 cases remain open, compared to 561 last year.

The Dental Board opened 663 new files, up from 409 last year, and sanctions included 12 suspensions and 1 revocation along with 83 other sanctions. 430 cases remain open compared with 393 last year.

The Nursing Board opened 1,543 new cases compared to 1,418 last year. Sanctions included 113 suspensions, 18 revocations, and 143 other sanctions. 1,053 files remain open compared to 1,022 last year.
